We depart from Ankara early in the morning by private vehicle. After a journey of about 4 hours, we arrive in Cappadocia. Following check-in at our hotel, we enjoy lunch at our panoramic restaurant in Ortahisar. Afterward, we begin our hike from Red Valley (Kızılvadi), where we will explore historic Orthodox churches. Along the way, we visit Üzümlü Church (Red Valley), St. Niketas Hermitage, the Columned Church (Güllüdere), and the Cross Church (Güllüdere).
During the hike, we will engage in in-depth conversations on monastic life, dovecotes and beekeeping, and volcanic formations. The valleys and surreal rock formations with their magical atmosphere will make us feel as if we are walking on another planet. Carved dwellings, hidden tunnels, and secret tombs will reveal the intertwined traces of ancient cultures and civilizations.
Our hike, not too demanding but rich in panoramic views, will end in Göreme (Maccan Village), where we will be staying. Please consider winter season and snowy conditions!
Backpack: A medium-sized trekking backpack (35–45 L) is ideal for carrying your daily needs. Avoid carrying items in your hands or hanging them outside the pack. Rain covers, often included with backpacks, are essential in wet weather. If your backpack doesn’t have one, bring an extra.
Hiking Boots: Use sturdy, supportive trekking boots with firm soles. Avoid soft-soled shoes. Waterproof boots are strongly recommended in rainy or snowy conditions.
Gaiters: Prevent snow and mud from entering your boots and add insulation.
Spare Sneakers: For comfort during travel and as a backup pair after hikes.
Socks: Synthetic trekking socks with reinforced heels and toes are best. Always bring an extra pair.
Gloves & Beanie: Essential in cold weather. Choose beanies that cover your ears. Bring at least one pair of mid-layer gloves.
Hat / Buff: A brimmed hat for sun protection (ideally covering the neck as well). Buffs or bandanas are also useful year-round.
Rain Jacket: Lightweight, breathable, and waterproof jackets (e.g., Gore-Tex or similar) are highly recommended. Always carry one during fall, winter, and spring hikes.
Fleece Jacket & Insulating Layers: Fleece tops and half-zip pullovers are light and insulating. Avoid wool and cotton, as they dry slowly and lose insulation when wet.
Pants: Instead of bulky ski pants, bring waterproof outer pants. Thermal underwear and fleece pants may not provide enough protection alone in windy or wet conditions.
Drinks: Carry 1.5–2 L of water. Sugary drinks are not recommended. Bring a thermos with hot beverages, especially in autumn and winter.
Thermos: Preferably steel (not glass-lined) for carrying hot drinks during long outdoor activities.
Camera: Bring your camera with extra film/memory cards and batteries. Protect it against rain and wet conditions.
Sunglasses: Always use UV-protected glasses. On snowy winter days, sunglasses are essential to prevent retina damage or snow blindness.
Sunscreen, Moisturizer, and Lip Balm: Use high SPF (45+) sunscreen in all seasons.
First Aid & Medication: Our guides carry comprehensive first aid kits and all are certified in International Wilderness First Aid (ECSII). Still, bring your personal medications and a small individual first aid kit.
Trekking Poles: Strongly recommended for winter hikes. Prefer collapsible telescopic models.
Environmental Note: We never leave waste in nature. Please carry back everything you bring. Use a small trash bag or an empty plastic bag to pack your waste.
