October 4–7, 2025 | Journey to the Untouched Bays of the Datça Peninsula
In the words of Altay Özcan, one of our esteemed guides and also the architect of the Carian Trail, the Datça Peninsula is described as follows on his website:
*”Datça, a narrow peninsula, ends at Deveboynu Cape where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean. In the early 20th century, it was also known for a time as the Reşadiye Peninsula, in honor of Sultan Mehmed Reşad’s ascension to the throne. Apart from the main settlement of Datça itself, there are no other major populated areas on this mountainous peninsula.
A large portion of the peninsula is protected and consists of maquis scrubland, forests, and rocky terrain, hosting many wild goats and endemic plant species. With its many beaches and untouched, uninhabited coves, the most popular way to discover this striking peninsula has traditionally been by boat.
The Carian Trail route begins in Old Datça, heading south and west across rugged headlands and bays, eventually reaching the ancient city of Knidos and the Deveboynu Lighthouse at the very tip of the peninsula. From here, several of the Greek Dodecanese islands can easily be seen. The trail then turns eastward, towards the mainland, following the almost entirely uninhabited northern shore of the Datça Peninsula to its narrowest point at Balıkaşıran, before continuing on to Cleopatra/Sedir Island. Near the village of Akçapınar, the route joins what may be one of Turkey’s most nostalgic roads— the old Muğla-Marmaris road lined with eucalyptus trees—before ending in Akyaka, a town recognized as a ‘Cittaslow’ (Slow City).”*
Today, exploring this captivating peninsula is no longer limited to boat trips—thanks to the Carian Trail, we can now reach its most remote corners on foot. We’ll be able to cool off in its crystal-clear waters, and the bays and rugged landscapes of Betçe, like an open-air museum, are waiting for us. Spring and autumn, and even February—when the almond trees are in bloom—are ideal times for hiking. The peninsula’s ever-present winds will allow us to walk without feeling overwhelmed.
