Kemerli Kaçkar & Altıparmak Mountains Climbing Expedition Series hakkında.

Are you ready to explore the majestic peaks of the Black Sea Mountains? We often come to this mountainous region for scenic hikes along its beautiful trails. As we move from one highland village to another, from one mountain lake to the next, we are guided by towering summits that touch the clouds. And we also organize climbs to these glorious peaks.

We climb the Kaçkar Mountains’ knightly summit — the Great Kaçkar Peak — from the south side of the range, starting from our main base camp, which we operate throughout the summer climbing season. For the Verçenik Peak — the second highest summit — we ascend from our comfortable camp on Verçenbek Plateau.

Now, you are looking at a new climbing series we’ve planned with the same MONTIS quality and safety you’ve come to expect. This program offers ascents of two of the most stunning peaks in the Kaçkar Mountains — all within a hotel-comfort setting and led by our most experienced mountain guides. We’ve also added a beautiful hike in the region as part of an enjoyable acclimatization and preparation phase to help you adapt to altitude.

We are aware of how lucky we are to have one of the world’s most unique mountainous regions. We want to share this beauty from above with participants who enjoy classical mountaineering and have experience in long mountain hikes and basic mountaineering techniques. Forget the long approaches and arduous camping of traditional Kaçkar climbs. We promise a fun, safe, and refined mountaineering experience distilled from our adventures in the mountains of Turkey and around the world.

Your guide for this tour will be our friend who has climbed some of the highest peaks in the world — including Everest itself. We believe that climbing with Mustafa alone makes this climbing series a truly unique experience for our participants.

As this tour is organized for small groups only, we recommend reserving your spot as soon as possible.

After a short drive along the cool valley, we head towards Çamlıhemşin, where we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast. Following a brief stop in the town center for final preparations, we’ll head to our mountain guesthouse in Avusor Plateau at a relaxed pace. Once settled in, our mountain guide will lead a comprehensive briefing session. After lunch, we’ll spend the rest of the day resting or exploring the plateau. Day 2: Acclimatization and Preparation Day

After a delightful breakfast, we’ll prepare for our first hike and acclimatization climb. Our goal is to gradually ascend to one of the steep passes connecting the northern and southern sections of the Kaçkar Mountains. Starting from our guesthouse, we’ll climb gently at first, then zigzag our way up the couloir leading to the pass. Once there, we’ll be treated to sweeping views of high pastures and glacial lakes on the southern side. These ancient passages were once used by nomads, shepherds, and mountain lovers to move between valleys—each path holding untold stories of festivals and love. After enjoying the scenery, we return to our guesthouse on the same route. In the evening, we’ll gather for another tasty dinner, followed by final preparations for the summit attempt.

    Approximate activity duration: 4–5 hours
Approximate altitudes: Avusor Plateau: 2400 m; Kızılgedik Pass: 2960 m
Included meals: Breakfast – Lunch (packed) – Dinner

Day 3: Summit Ascent – Kemerli Kaçkar Mountain

Today, we rise a bit earlier for breakfast and begin our climb. Our first goal is the Avusor Lake at the foot of Kemerli Kaçkar (also known as Kuşaklı Kaçkar), one of the most striking peaks in the Kaçkar range. After our first long break by the lake, we continue ascending the classic route. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged, and eventually, we begin using our hands for simple scrambling moves—an authentic alpine experience. We will follow the easiest route around the rocky summit mass and reach the majestic summit of Kemerli Kaçkar, one of the iconic high points of the Kaçkar Mountains. After soaking in the panoramic views and signing the summit log, we descend slowly and carefully via the same path. Don’t forget to enjoy the stunning views on the way down! In the late afternoon, we return to our guesthouse where hot tea awaits. Sharing the day’s excitement over dinner will be a true joy. A good rest tonight is crucial for our next summit day.

Approximate altitudes: Avusor Plateau: 2400 m; Avusor Lake: 2700 m; Kemerli Kaçkar Summit: 3562 m
    Approximate hiking duration: 8–10 hours
Included meals: Breakfast – Lunch (packed) – Dinner

Day 4: Summit Ascent – Altıparmak Mountain

Good morning to a pristine summit day in the Kaçkar Mountains! After breakfast, we set out with excitement towards our goal: Altıparmak Mountain. As the name suggests, this massif consists of several peaks lined up like fingers interlocked in a horon dance. Starting from Avusor, we follow shepherd and livestock paths that gently ascend northward. After crossing a small pass separating two valleys, we descend into the opposite valley before climbing up again. Here, we’ll take a break at what might be the highest lodge in Turkey. After this, we continue to ascend through scree slopes toward the base of the summit tower. The final section requires light scrambling using hands again, progressing step by step toward the summit and its breathtaking views. After the summit rituals, we descend slowly and carefully as a group. On the way back, we take a longer break at the mountain lodge before crossing back over the pass and returning to Avusor Plateau—tired but deeply satisfied. Tonight, we celebrate!

Approximate altitudes: Avusor Plateau: 2400 m; Dadala Mountain Lodge: 2800 m; Altıparmak Summit: 3472 m
    Approximate hiking duration: 10–12 hours
Included meals: Breakfast – Lunch (packed) – Dinner

Day 5: Transfer to Rize-Artvin Airport according to flight times

Today is a relaxed day to savor the aftermath of our climbs. We’ll gather a bit later for one last delicious breakfast. After checking out, we enjoy the calm of Avusor Plateau before heading downhill to Ayder, then to Çamlıhemşin. On the way, we’ll walk to Tar Creek Waterfall and visit Çinçiva, one of the region’s most vibrant villages. Before we drop you off at the airport, we highly recommend a final stop at a local restaurant where you can indulge in some of the region’s finest dishes and unique desserts. We promise to have you at the airport at least two hours before your flight.

Recommended Equipment & Our Suggestions

Travel Bag:
You should bring a sufficiently large bag to carry your belongings during intercity travel. Please avoid hard-shell suitcases, as they cause difficulties when loading into vehicles, carrying in nature camps, or placing inside tents. Soft-shell duffel bags, backpacks, or hand luggage are suitable for this trip.

Daypack:
A medium-sized backpack (35–45 L) is ideal for carrying your daily needs during activities. Avoid carrying gear in your hands or hanging from your bag.

Sturdy Hiking Boots:
Avoid using flexible, soft-soled shoes for long hikes. If you are a regular hiker, we highly recommend stiff-soled, orthopedic trekking boots. Waterproof boots are essential during rainy seasons.

Spare Walking Shoes:
Bring an extra pair of shoes for comfort during travel or to use at camp or after hikes.

Socks:
Synthetic trekking socks with reinforced soles and toes offer the best comfort. Always carry an extra pair of socks.

Gloves & Beanie:
Bring at least one pair of mid-weight gloves and a beanie that covers your ears—especially during colder seasons.

Hat:
A hat with a brim (and neck protection if possible) is recommended year-round. Buffs and bandanas are also useful alternatives or supplements.

Rain Jacket:
Opt for lightweight, breathable, and waterproof rain jackets or anoraks, especially in fall, winter, and spring. Gore-Tex or similar materials are preferred for their breathability and waterproofing.

Fleece Jacket & Warm Layers:
Fleece jackets or pullovers are ideal as they are lightweight and dry quickly. Avoid wool and bulky insulated jackets. Layer fleece under a breathable waterproof jacket for optimal warmth and comfort.

Trekking Pants & Shorts:
Synthetic or semi-synthetic trekking pants are recommended. Avoid jeans, linen, or cotton as they restrict movement and dry slowly. We do not recommend shorts due to potential scratches or injuries from terrain or vegetation.

Beverages:
Carry 1.5–2 liters of water. Avoid sugary drinks. A portion of your beverage can be hot tea or another drink in a thermos, especially useful in colder months.

Thermos:
Bring a durable plastic or steel thermos (not glass-lined) to carry hot drinks during remote activities.

Camera:
Bring a camera with spare batteries and memory cards or film. Protect it from moisture in case of rain or wet conditions.

Sunglasses:
UV-protected sunglasses are a must—especially in snowy environments to prevent snow blindness and eye damage.

Sunscreen, Moisturizer & Lip Balm:
High SPF sunscreen (minimum SPF 45) is recommended in all seasons.

First Aid & Medications:
While all MONTIS Trips & Expeditions guides carry a comprehensive first aid kit and hold international Wilderness First Aid (ECSII) certification, you should also carry your own essential medications and a personal first aid kit.

For further advice about selecting your gear, feel free to contact us at any time.

Environmental Note:
We leave no trace in nature. Please remember to carry all your waste back with you. You can bring a small garbage bag or reuse plastic bags to store your waste during hikes.
