Here we go! This time we are going to Morocco, the most beautiful and colourful country in North Africa, for a winter expedition. For those who like to explore the mountains of the globe, we have prepared a special winter climbing tour in the authentic atmosphere of the Atlas Mountains. You may know the colours of the Maghreb region. However, a little-known aspect of the Atlas Mountains -which stands out with its sun and desert- is that the snowy mountains are an ice climbing destination and even a satisfying alpine ski touring destination, especially for European mountaineers. In this winter climbing trip, we will share with you one of the most special experiences in this glamorous country, where we have travelled many times for hiking and climbing in the mountains in all four seasons, where we wandered in the cities and bazaars of the tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
The Atlas Mountains are very important for northern Africa. Real owners of those mountains are the inhabitants of Berber villages located in the valleys. Streams, lush farmlands and gardens are part of the Moroccan riot of colours. The Atlas Mountain Range is commonly divided into three ranges: Middle Atlas, High Atlas, Anti-Atlas. The region we have chosen for winter climbing will be the High Atlas part, which is one of the frequently visited places by European hikers and alpinists. The High Atlas is a much more impressive mountain region in winter with its deep valleys, Berber villages and surrounding peaks. Mount Toubkal (4167 m) is the highest peak of the Atlas Mountains. In our winter climbing expedition, we will climb in a snowy-icy environment, which is a big surprise for this sun-identified country. In addition to Mount Toubkal we will also climb Ras Ouanoukrim (4083 m) and Timzguida (4089 m) Peak by traversing double peaks. Winter climbing on these three great mountains are promising a paradise sense for mountaineers. We are talking about a comfortable climb in which the loads are carried by mules and carriers and staying in a cozy mountain refuge. We will do such a satisfying and demanding winter climbing trip with the comfort of a refuge. For the general safety and summit success, we have prepared such a climbing program that includes rest days, spare days and acclimatization opportunities for unexpected conditions.
This special journey to the mountains of Maghreb with spectacular views is suitable for anyone who are in good shape and determined enough for using ice-axe and crampons. Winter climbing experience is a plus while it is also fine for dedicated newbies to winter climbing. We invite you to an unforgettable adventure in the High Atlas, among the peaks over 4000 meters.
After our mountain tour, we will head to Marrakech. Marrakech is like the places of the Arabian Nights. In Marrakech, aka ‘’ the red city or the pink city’’, with its living historical heritage, bazaars and palaces, which has been included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO, life flows very differently from what we are used to in our western world. While the square is like a circus, a fairground with snake charmers, acrobats, story tellers, street vendors in local clothes during the day, food stalls are set up in the crowded and lively square until late at night. The night starts a different uproar. You will literally feel yourself in a fairy tale in this city.

Menara Palm 4* Hotel
Palm Menara is a 4* hotel in the opera district in Marrakech, away from the hustle of the old city but within walking distance. It more than meets all our needs with its 4-star quality in our short-term stays. We choose this hotel because of its spacious rooms, delicious food and breakfast service, and location.
We prefer original and authentic riad accommodation for our small groups during our stays in Marrakech. For our larger groups, we prefer Magador Opera 4* or hotels of the same quality and location.
Riad Jnane İmlil
A family-run Riad Jnane Imlil is a wonderful boutique hotel among lush gardens in Imlil Village. It stands out with its special service quality, delicious food, wonderful terrace and spacious rooms in a peaceful atmosphere. There is also the possibility that we can leave all our excess belongings on the way to the mountain. We use this facility as our epicentre for our events in the Atlas Mountains.
Toubkal Dağevi (Les Mouflounnes)
Although the standard accommodation in this refuge is dormitory type rooms for at least 8 people, we are planning to stay in a limited number of private rooms. Refuge has shared bathrooms.

WEATHER
Generally, three different climate types are seen in the country. The Mediterranean climate with abundant precipitation prevails on the Mediterranean coasts, and a sea climate open to westerly winds is observed on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. While a cooler and more continental climate prevails in the Atlas Mountains and the valleys between them, which are the central parts of the country, a desert climate prevails in the interior, especially in the south-east. As of the winter period we will be in Morocco, the weather is mild but rainy in the cities. Short-term heavy rains can be seen. In the High Atlas Mountains, the temperatures drop below -5 degrees C at night.
TIME ZONE
Morocco is located in the GMT +0 time zone. The time difference with Turkey is summer – 2 hours. In other words, while it is 17:45 in Turkey, it is 15:45 in Morocco.
HEALTH, VACCINATIONS, WATER, FOOD AND HYGIENE
There is no vaccine for a disease in the recommended risk group for Morocco.
The way to have a healthy travel in Africa is to eat and drink with personal hygiene and reliable cleaning. We advise you not to drink water from taps in cities or from springs in the mountains, and not to consume ice and icy drinks of unknown origin. Your tour leaders personally monitor the availability of drinking water to be provided during your stay on the mountain. Spring waters used in the mountains/nature are boiled and microbiologically purified with chlorine tablets. Where appropriate (almost the entire tour), closed water is used. The cleanliness of the dishes and their suitability for our taste are also tightly controlled by our tour leaders. We strongly recommend that you do not eat or drink from anywhere other than the recommendations and directions of your tour leaders.
The accommodation we chose in our tour provides very good cleaning conditions. For the need for shower and toilet, there may not be any risks related to cleaning. However, we still recommend that you pay attention to your personal hygiene.
MONEY AND BANKS
The currency is Dirham (Dh). The approximate exchange rate is Euro 1 = 10.42 MAD (Dh)( January 2025 ). Besides the USD, the Euro is also a frequently used currency in these countries. However, for your shopping with small businesses, it is useful to have Dh.
While travellers’ checks can be used easily in large centers, you may encounter difficulties in small centers or you may have to accept an amount that is less than its value.
Almost all central regions have currency exchange offices. Exchanges can also be made in banks, but exchange offices should be preferred due to the scarcity of procedures and the higher rates they give. However, the rates may not be fixed in every exchange office.
Credit Card Usage is very common in Morocco, especially in Marrakech and Casablanca. You can use your credit cards in large businesses and well-known places, sometimes paying commissions of 5% to 10%.
The money you will carry with you is 50 USD / Euro or less, which will provide convenience in terms of change in some shopping.
ATMs All major centers have ATMs (Guichets automatiques) open 24 hours, where you can withdraw cash.
Prices in Morocco are as much as Turkey. However, there may be surprisingly high prices for some touristic and luxury shopping items. However, their bargaining habits are highly developed, and knowing a little French or Arabic and being persistent can bring prices down. Be prepared to encounter stubborn sellers as it is possible to get unexpected discounts.
It is also a good idea to have a few meals, visas, drinks, and some cash during the trip, which are not included in the tour price, due to the tipping tradition that is common in Africa. Having a total of 300 – 500 Euros with you helps you be vigilant against emergencies and shopping needs.
SECURITY
Morocco was a hippie destination until recently. However, its proximity to Europe and its relative development have made the country an important tourism destination in recent years. Despite this, old habits and dangers can continue, especially in cities such as Marrakech, Meknes and Fez. Especially in the last few years, tourism police centers established in such centers have been fighting mainly drug dealers, fake guides and street scammers and have largely prevented these dangers. Although life-threatening situations are not common, it is recommended not to wander alone, especially at night.
The best precautions to be taken; not wandering alone in very quiet areas, taking a taxi instead of walking in the deserted streets of big cities at late hours, not consuming friendly food and drinks in public transport, and rejecting the vendors with a definite but non-aggressive language can be listed as being cautious. Besides, try not to give the impression that you are there for the first time as much as possible.
It is recommended that you always carry your money and valuables with you in a convenient and safe way, whether in the city or on the mountain. Do not forget to carry your valuables and money close to your body and in ways that are not visible from the outside. Carry cash with you in several pieces in a secure inner pocket, or in a waist or neck wallet that you can stash under your clothing.
It is a behavior that we recommend to all travelers to keep valuable and attractive items out of sight, to use them in a way that is not encouraging and interesting, and to avoid attention-grabbing clothes and behaviors.
LOCAL SERVICES AND TIPS
It is extremely common to be rewarded with a tip for all the local services you receive in Morocco. It is appropriate to tip between 100-180 Euros per participant for our local team (guide-carrier-cook-driver and hotels) who will accompany us throughout our tour. Your tour leader will guide you in this regard for the correct rewarding and tip amounts throughout the tour.
